Sculptural 18th Century Italian Crucifix with Aquamarine and Fluorite

About the Item

Sculptural 18th century Italian crucifix with aquamarine and fluorite in matrix. The 18th century Italian crucifix originally came from a church in Italy. It is mounted on the aquamarine and fluorite in matrix which perfectly coordinates with the original blue colors of the crucifix. The mineral is dusted with antique turmeric yellow powders that were used by Italian restorers. The piece is put together by Jean O'Reilly Barlow, the artist and creative director of Interi. The date of manufacture reflects when she transformed the piece and the period shows that the Italian crucifix is originally 18th century. The Italian crucifix is preserved and transformed into a figurative, contemporary work of art. With the combination of the precious minerals, the church artifact becomes a sculptural work of historic and organic significance. Interi is known for its precious collections of sculptural ecclesiastical artifacts. Recently Interi's Crucifix Collection exhibited with Museo de' Medici in Florence, Italy which closed in the spring of 2024.

Crucifix on Calvary, Called Plague of Christ, France, Early 18th Century
Located in Milan, IT
Crucifix on Calvary, called 'Pestis Christi' or Crucifiix Pestis 'Plague of Christ' or Plague Crucifix). The sculpture is composite, made with heterogeneous materials: wax, wood, papier-mâché. The octagonal base is slightly raised and supports the calvary, symbolized by rocks, from which the crucifix rises, made with intentionally unfinished boards and with marked veins. The depicted Christ is peculiar: he shows scarified skin all over his body. Masterfully crafted in wax. They are the plagues of the plague that Christ, 'Agnus Dei' takes charge of with salvific value, for the salvation of the world. At his feet the ordeal full of symbols: evil (snake) with the apple, the 'Memento mori' of human bones...
