Viennese Bronze 'Fancy Dancer' On Onyx Base as a Bookend, by Gerdago, ca 1925

About the Item

Young Art Deco dancer made of gilded and cold-painted bronze in exotic costume, kneeling on one knee, holding a book in front of the other, upright leg, looking to the side with her head made of decorated ivory. The figure is based on a rectangular onyx base with bevelled, slightly fluted sides and, together with the onyx counterpart without a figure, forms a pair of bookends. Design: Gerdago (1906 - 2004) Born as Gerda Gottstein, also: Gerda Gottschlich, Gerda Irro, Gerda Iro, was an Austrian costume designer. She received artistic training in Berlin in 1927 and in Paris in 1928/29 and worked as an assistant to the architect Oskar Strnad. Between 1925 and 1930, Gottstein designed numerous statuettes in the Art Deco style. Her figures in primarily dramatic postures wear futuristic costumes with often eccentric headgear and are usually decorated with colorful, cold-lacquered enamel and richly gilded. The Viennese foundry Artur Rubinstein made the objects signed with Gerdago according to Gottstein's drawings and drafts. Manufactured around 1925 by Artur Rubinstein, Vienna Materials: Bronze, bone, onyx Bronze modeling, casting, gilded and cold painted Dimensions: Bookend with figure: height: 16.0 cm / 6.29 in width: 20.0 cm / 7.87 in depth: 8.0 cm / 3.14 in Bookend without figure: height: 13.0 cm / 5.11 in width: 20.0 cm / 7.87 in depth: 8.0 cm / 3.14 in Very well maintained condition - slight signs of wear on the onyx bases.
