"Young Woman with Head Scarf" Sculpture by Gregory for Folger Library Architect

An extraordinary piece of American sculpture, this depiction of a young woman, dated 1930, was sculpted in white marble by John Gregory -- who executed 9 large bas relief panels for the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C. -- for Paul Philippe Cret, who was the Library's architect. Clearly Gregory and Cret were friends as well as colleagues, and this sculpture may have been executed as a gesture of appreciation from Gregory to Cret; indeed, the Library's cornerstone was laid the same year this sculpture was created.
