About the Item
Full of tender affection and familial love, this marble sculpture is one of the finest works of Chester Beach, one of America’s foremost sculptors in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s. Beach sculpted a number of important public monuments, including the Fountain of the Waters near the Cleveland Museum of Art and a major piece for the New York World’s Fair in 1939. This piece, with the father reaching over to embrace his newborn child and its mother, is both sensual and tender, and shows the clear influence of Auguste Rodin in France.
