Ancient Egyptian Monumental Temple Sphinxes
About the Item
These monumental limestone sphinxes, carved with the idealised visage of Pharaoh Nectanebo I (c. 379-360 BC) atop a lion’s body, are icons of ancient Egyptian culture. Depicted in the typical recumbent pose, with paws extended and tails curled, they are impressive display pieces with deep historical significance. Once lining the processional avenue leading up to the Serapeum of Memphis - the sacred burial site of the Apis bull cult - they guided pharaohs during sacred rituals. But, remarkably, by the 20th century, these sphinxes were misidentified as 19th century reproductions and used as garden ornaments. Now rightfully reattributed and researched, they are enduring symbols of Egyptian artistry and culture, offering a unique opportunity to a collector to acquire monumental pieces of historical importance.
