Antique Top Quality Carved Black Forest Style Knitting Farmer's Wife Sculpture

About the Item

One of the best ever hand carved, black forest of Southern Germany sculptures. This unique antique is for the collectors and connoisseurs, because the quality in the details of this relatively small Black Forest region sculpture is simply phenomenal. This is one of the best and finest carved, small black forest sculptures we have ever seen and we feel it would not be out of place in a museum either. The details in her carved hair, in this older ladies' facial features, in the amazing basket and knitting tools (including the extremely fine needles), in the way her antique and detailed traditional costume is perfectly carved and finally the perfect body posture and her gazing-into-the-distance eyes, they all reveal the incredible workmanship, talent and dedication of a master sculptor. We have yet to find out who he was, but he can only have been one of the greats. The way in which this older lady seems to be looking over the knitting work, to us, is where the deeper meaning or spiritual aspect of this sculpture is 'hidden'. Most people who knit are so handy in what they are doing that they don't necessary need to look at the knitting itself. And because of that it is not uncommon for the mind to take over and show images of things that have happened in the past or one may start to think of all kinds of things whilst knitting. The gaze of this older lady therefor, to us, is a sign that this artist has a level of awareness that only the better artists have and it is only they who are therefor capable of incorporating this type of 'human behavior' in their work. To have found this antique sculpture in museum quality condition makes it one of our best finds this year. We are proud to offer it to the 1stdibs community first and our fair price for this work of (fine) art even includes perfect packing and also worldwide delivery from our store to your door in just 4 to 6 days. Maximum height x width x depth: 7.1 x 4.5 x 3.9 inches. We have a passion for the unique, for quality, for stylish and artistic and for craftsmanship of years gone by. Your purchases will be extremely well packaged and we look forward to serving you (again).
