French 1900s Painted Iron Mythological Centaur Sculpture Mounted on Custom Base

About the Item

A French painted iron centaur sculpture from the early 20th century, mounted on a custom base. This French decorative object features a theme borrowed from the Greco-Roman mythology, a centaur, half-man half-horse, holding with pride grapes in his right hand and a cup in his left. Known for their taste for wine, centaurs symbolized animal desires for the Greeks. The depiction of our centaur is quite exquisite. The golden tones of the painted iron contrast beautifully with the darker color of the custom base. The details of the face and body are skillfully done, the general movement is quite lively. A small hole in the center of the centaur's chest suggests that the piece may have been mounted on a wall, perhaps as part of a bigger scene. Centaurs are sometimes associated with Bacchus, god of wine. The other side of the sculpture is unfinished, it will then be advised to place this decorative object against a wall. With its Neoclassical influence and great presence, this French centaur sculpture, circa 1900 will be a great decorative accent in any room.
