Beautiful Ming dynasty latticework from the Forbidden City. Beautiful glazed teal colored terracotta with a geometric pattern and a flowerlike mandala form on the centre. Great condition with minor chips. Excellent patina. Ming dynasty, China, circa 1368-1644 AD. The Forbidden City is a palace complex in central Beijing, China. The former Chinese imperial palace from the Ming dynasty to the end of the Qing dynasty—the years 1420-1912, it now houses the Palace Museum. The Forbidden City served as the home of emperors and their households as well as the ceremonial and political centre of Chinese government for almost 500 years. A mandala (literally "circle") is a spiritual and ritual symbol in Hinduism and Buddhism, representing the universe. In common use, "mandala" has become a generic term for any diagram, chart or geometric pattern that represents the cosmos metaphysically or symbolically; a microcosm of the universe.
