18th Century Italian Wood Candlestick Decorated with a Crystal and Shells

About the Item

18th century Italian (Region of Liguria) wood candlestick decorated with a calcite crystal in matrix, a specimen from the Elmwood Mine, and gold leaf shells. This mine produces some of the most finest crystallized examples of calcite crystals and "are unequaled by those from any other locality," according to the "American Mineral Treasures" (pg. 337). The gold leaf is hand-applied to the shells and coordinates with the gold detail on the candlestick.

This fragment is from a church in Florence. It was found and saved from the historic flooding of the Arno River in 1966. The piece has been naturally distressed from the flood. It has been preserved and transformed by Jean O'Reilly Barlow, the creative director of Interi.
