Azurite on Custom Made Metal Base

About the Item

Azurite is a copper carbonate, usually found in combination with other copper minerals such as its much better known green brother malachite. The mineral is full blue in color and is virtually opaque with a silky sheen. Azurite usually forms in oxidation zones of copper deposits, where secondary to malachite other minerals such as chrysocolla and naturally solid copper can often form. Mining activities of azurite and malachite are already known from 3800 years ago (England). As early as 3000 years ago, malachite was smelted to extract copper. In the past, azurite was also ground to be used as a pigment for wall paintings. Famous painters such as Michelangelo, Vermeer and Rembrandt used this pigment known as "Ultramarine" and at the time was very expensive and therefore only bought by the famous great painters. Today, most azurite comes from Arizona (USA) and Morocco. Exceptionally beautiful and pure azurites like this one from Russia are usually found in very small quantities. Other deposits of such quality include Chessy (France) and Tsumeb (Namibia).
