End-Cut from the Imilac Meteorite
About the Item
Imilac Meteorite End-Cut
circa 4.5 Billion y/o
Measures: 10 x 13 x 1 cm
“This interior section of the Imilac pallasite shows a large range of olivine grain sizes there are coarse grains, grain clusters and fine-grained, crushed olivine debris. All of the olivine grains are surrounded by a matrix of metallic iron-nickel derived from the top of a molten core of a differentiated asteroid”.
Dr Alan E. Rubin, PhD Department of Earth, Planetary, and Space Sciences, UCLA
Comprising less than 0.2% of all meteorites, pallasites are perhaps the most dazzling of all extraterrestrial specimens. This piece is an end-cut from the interior of the Imilac meteorite, found in 1822 in the Atacama desert, showing both the rugged exterior on one side, and on the other, revealing a honeycomb-like interior structure of olivine and peridot gems, imbedded in an iron-nickel matrix.
Dating to the formation of our solar system, pallasites are fragments of an asteroid which, like our own planet, was large enough to under- go differentiation, splitting into a mantle and a core. Originating from the transitional core-mantle boundary, they were set free by a large collision which propelled them out of the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter and into an Earth-bound orbit. As well as being extraordinarily beautiful they are scientifically invaluable, helping us to understand the formation and structure of our planet, whose core is made of the same iron and nickel.
