About

Stalactite on Crystal Base Studio Greytak’s Stalactite on Crystal Base displays proof of nature’s infinite patience with two pieces that could only exist after eons of growth. One of the longest stalactite formations in the world hangs from the ceiling of Doolin Cave on the western coast of Ireland. Over the course of the last 70,000 years, the slow, steady drip of water left behind a collection of solid mineral columns that measure almost 24 feet from the origin point to the tip. Jeita Grotto in Lebanon houses its own 27-foot stalactite amidst rippling sheets of minerals that resemble a massive pipe organ. Mexico, New Zealand, Slovakia, China, the United States—each boast their own natural sculptures hundreds of millennia in the making. Wherever mineral-laden water drips from above, stalactites can potentially form. The water must flow at just the right speed. Fast enough that the water collects at a common point, and slow enough that the liquid has time to evaporate. Each falling drop leaves a thin layer of mineral in the shape of a ring. Each subsequent drop leaves a new layer on top of the old, and after enough time, the solidified mineral forms a long, hollow tube called a soda straw. When the tube is blocked by debris, the water spills over the sides and builds the more familiar cone shape. The average stalactite grows at 0.0051 inches per year. Although calcite stalactites are most common, any soluble mineral can form a stalactite. Opal, chalcedony, limonite, malachite, rhodochrosite—all decorate caverns around the world. Cross-sections or slices of stalactites reveal endless combinations of colors and patterns. The shape of the stalactite itself is infinitely variable, from individual cylinders and cones to interconnected waterfalls, broad blades, grape-like clusters, and jagged shark teeth. Added to the metaphysical power of the mineral within, the stalactite brings the patience and perseverance required of a structure built over thousands of years. Crystal quartz, too, is a product of millennia, beginning as tiny molecules in the wake of lava flows. Extreme geologic pressure over millions of years creates beautiful transparent crystals. Anywhere crystal quartz, or rock crystal, has been collected throughout history, it has captivated humanity. The Greeks named it krystalos, meaning ice—they believed it formed at the highest elevations and froze too hard to melt. Cultures around the world regarded rock crystal as an intermediary between the visible and invisible worlds, capable of producing visions and enhancing clairvoyance. For centuries, rock crystal has been shaped into perfectly clear crystal balls used to produce visions of the future. Since antiquity, traditional healers have relied on this form of quartz to amplify the power of other elements nearby and programmed it to manifest love, abundance, and positive change by focusing intention upon it. This allows one to achieve virtually any goal. Clear quartz is a stone of light, providing a clear path for higher vibrations from spiritual realms to the physical world. Place this compelling natural sculpture where its infinite wisdom can quietly put into perspective today’s challenges. Materials: Stalactite Quartz base.
