Tanya Ragir "Rolling Hills" Wall Sculpture

About the Item

"Rolling Hills" is a large-scale wall mounted sculpture composed of 36 individual elements which can be installed in a variety of configurations. This is one of the earliest pieces in Tanya Ragir's body of work that examines the human figure as landscape and landscape as human figure. She intertwines organic forms with the geometric structure to create autonomous abstract elements that also exist as cohesive landscape and body. Castings from this limited edition are made to order and can be fabricated in cast stone (pictured), bronze or resin; prices will vary. Lead time is 12 weeks with payment in full required upon ordering. Dimensions: 13 x 10 x 8 inches (each element) 4 1/2 feet; Height x 8 feet; Width x 8 inches; Depth (installed as pictured with 3/4 inches space between each element.) The piece is also available in the original smaller 1/3 scale in all three of the finishes. please contact for pricing. All of our sales are final, no refunds and no returns. About the artist: Tanya Ragir was born and raised in Los Angeles. From an early age she pursued very seriously studies in modern dance, jazz and ballet, as well as figurative visual art. Her extensive dance background was and continues to be a major influence in her art practice. After graduating, from UC Santa Cruz in 1976 with a B.A. in Art and Dance, Ragir began working in the commercial mannequin industry as a figure sculptor and eventually founded her own mannequin business. While excelling in a career as a mannequin sculptor, she simultaneously maintained a fine art practice. Ragir’s sculptural work is now internationally collected and resides in permanent museum collections as well as private collections. Her artwork has ranged from classical to avant-garde, always evolving and morphing in response to the climactic events of her life. The human form is a constant presence in her work, as is movement. Different bodies of work explore the expansion of energy in different directions, both internal and external, personal and allegorical. Tanya Ragir currently lives and works in Los Angeles, CA.

About the artist: Hugh Townley (1923-2008), the sculptor and printmaker, taught and made art from 1952 until his death on February 1, 2008. He worked primarily in wood, but also made monumental outdoor works in concrete. His sculptures -- reliefs and free-standing works -- are intricate constructions of interlocking shapes cut on a band-saw from many woods, both common and exotic. He used a recurring iconography of imaginative, often whimsical, forms, drawn from nature and his wide studies of Native American culture and Eastern spiritualism. The patterns of the saw, combined with the grain of the wood and natural imperfections, are integral to the design. On many later reliefs he used vibrant color, creating exuberantly original but instantly recognizable sculpture. His latest work was in plywood. He found unseen possibilities in its construction, exploiting the intricacy of design, of which he said: "The layering of the plywood with its black glue lines and rhythmical repeat patterns, plus its physical versatilities, glue-ability and handsome flatness intrigue me." In 1955, when he was 32, Townley's work was shown in MOMA's Penthouse Gallery, for New Talent. A critic wrote: "Wherever he has lived, Townley has exhibited. He is completely original, taking no slant from any other artist. The viewer is bound to respect his independence, admire his love of material, especially wood, and praise his excellent workmanship. Hugh Townley was born in Lafayette, Indiana and grew up in Madison, Wisconsin. At 19, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Europe. On his return in 1945, he enrolled in the Fine Arts program at the University of Wisconsin. One teacher suggested that he study with Ossip Zadkine in Paris, which he did. That experience, and his subsequent year working for the Marshall Plan in The Hague, gave him a valuable breadth of experience in the post-World War II art...
