Magnificent Important Antique Large Silver Covered Chalice

About the Item

Sensational large silver Chalice with cover beautifully handcrafted entirely in silver (800 silver standard); decorated with motifs in relief, pierced, engraved and chased designs. It is inspired directly in similar pieces influenced by Medieval Germany, in full Mannerism, due to the importance that Germanic silver had in that century; the German and Central European architects in general created for the collectors' cabinets rich pieces designed to be displayed and not used, this piece is a great example of virtuosity and ornamental wealth of 'Mannerist' silverware. The vessel has a cylindrical shape, adorned with pierced and embossed reliefs and again a typical motif of 'Mannerist' silverware. The lid is topped with an angelic cherub. Total approx. weight: 3885 grams, circa 1880.
