Gilbert Valentin Zoomorphic Vase in Glazed Earthenware, Vallauris, 1950's

About the Item

Gilbert Valentin Zoomorphic vase in glazed earthenware, Vallauris, 1950's. Gilbert Valentin was born in Nancy. It was in 1946 in Dieulefit that Gilbert Valentin discovered ceramics. This first experience was soon followed by a professional apprenticeship at the National School of Vierzon in the ceramics section and then by a job at the Lunéville-Saint-Clément faience factory as a ceramic engineer. It is thus with a great mastery of the techniques of ceramics, in particular enamels, that the artist will approach his career as a ceramist. The real start came in 1950, when the artist decided to settle in Vallauris. With the help of his wife Lilette, he founded Les Archanges. Frien with many artists, painters, sculptors, musicians, writers, including Pablo Picasso, Jacques Prévert, Georges Braque or Jean Cocteau, who in 1960 was named president of the Club des Archanges. This one is going to have very quickly a multiple vocation; ceramics, pottery, painting, sculpture, metal art, weaving and lithography. Gilbert Valentin will actively participate in the renewal of the forms and the decorations. Using at that time a red clay, sometimes chamotte, the artist is interested in different techniques: turned, modeled or cast pieces. With a predilection for sturdy pieces, the artist renewed certain forms: jugs without handles that are held by the neck as well as research into zoomorphic forms in small and medium-sized pieces like the one presented here.
