Italian Hand-Painted Deruta Majolica Covered Urn or Jar with Hunt Scenes, 1950s

About the Item

This is a charming vintage hand-painted majolica covered urn or apothecary jar from Deruta, Italy, beautifully decorated with a continuous equestrian hunt scene that wraps gracefully around the body. Mounted riders in traditional red and blue hunting attire lead a lively pack of hounds through a rolling countryside of verdant hills and stylized woodlands, capturing the spirited pageantry of a classic European hunt. The domed lid is painted with a canopy of lush green foliage, visually extending the landscape below and creating a cohesive decorative composition. Executed in the celebrated ceramic tradition of Deruta, the decoration combines whimsical storytelling with crisp hand-painted detail and a fresh palette of greens, warm browns, soft blues, and vibrant red accents against a creamy white glazed ground. The elegant urn form, raised on a molded pedestal foot and topped with its original finial, lends the piece a sculptural presence equally suited to a mantel, console or display cabinet. The underside bears the Maioliche Deruta rooster factory mark together with impressed production numbers, confirming its origin in one of Italy's most celebrated centers of ceramic production. Dating to the mid-20th century, circa 1950s–1960s, the jar is a delightful example of decorative Italian majolica that celebrates the enduring tradition of the hunt through expressive hand-painted imagery. The piece is in very good vintage condition with wear commensurate with age and use. There is a small pit to the pedestal foot, believed to be an original manufacturing characteristic, shown in the accompanying photographs and mentioned only for complete accuracy.
