Modern Mexican Rustic Clay Vessel Bottle Pottery Made in Oaxaca Stripes Folk Art

About the Item

This natural color ceramic piece is a faithful copy of an old blown glass bottle, used as a container for wine, mezcal or schnapps. Omar designs this piece highlighting its imperfections. By using the sgraffito technique he decorates the bottle inspired by fingerprints, he paints the bottle with oxides and earths. About the artist Take tradition to evolve, transform, and innovate are all part of Omar Hernández’s work. Born in a pottery town he was taught from a young age the fundamentals. It was later when Omar decided to change the direction of the work he was doing to create his own language. His creations include objects inspired by pre-Hispanic pieces (ceremonial vessels), utilitarian pieces (oval casseroles, bowls, jars) that transform completely when decorating them with own designs and turning them into works of object art, and ornamental pieces inspired by nature (wall hanging pieces, vases with decoration of vegetal elements or large tree leaf size). Focusing his work on the subjects related to Oaxaca, where he is based; such as the perception of death, mezcal, and nature from the state. Materials & Technique “I like to work with colors that are found in nature, observing and getting inspired by nature; the texture of the tree trunks and leaves.” Omar cooks his pieces in both wood and gas oven. Using sgraffito decoration or modeling of decorative elements to be added to the main parts; in other cases using the texture of natural elements (leaves, stones) that he prints on fresh mud. Glazed on the inside so it can be utilitarian.
