Signed A.E. Chanal French Art Nouveau Organic Repoussé Pewter Lidded Jar Box

About the Item

An extraordinary early 20th-century French Art Nouveau hand-hammered repoussé pewter round lidded jar / trinket box by the renowned collaborative studio of Alice (1872–1951) & Eugène-Louis (1872–1925) Chanal. Fully signed A.E. CHANAL on the underside. Executed with a masterly tactile technique, this substantial vessel features an organic, textured body with vertical chased details topped by a deeply embossed repoussé lid resembling a sea urchin or botanical seed pod motif. The piece showcases a rich, deep charcoal-grey patina that highlights the hand-hammered facets and undulating contours. From the prestigious estate of Joan Conway Crancer, an esteemed St. Louis art collector, longtime Saint Louis Art Museum Trustee, and daughter of the famous painter Fred Conway Stamped / Incised A.E. CHANAL on the bottom, verifying production by Alice and Eugène Chanal in Paris. Eugène-Louis and Alice Chanal were among the most innovative French studio pewter metalworkers of the late Art Nouveau and early Art Deco periods in Paris. Working in hammered pewter (étain martelé), their organic, sculptural works bridge naturalism and early modernism and are represented in major decorative arts museum collections.
