19th Century Indian Patinated Bronze Cooking Urli with Handles and Fleurs-de-Lys

About

Decorate a table or countertop with this elegant bronze cooking dish. Crafted in Southern India, circa 1860, the antique Urli has a neoclassical shape with wide mouth, short height and handles on both sides and Fleurs-de-Lys detail. This dish was a traditional container used for serving food in temples and other holy sites. The rounded, shallow Urli is in excellent condition and flaunts a rich patina throughout. This unique, durable bowl could be used as a decorative centerpiece, or as a jardinière or planter outdoors. An Urli is a traditional cookware extensively used in South India, commonly made of clay, copper and bronze. The name Urli is derived from the Tamil word "Urulai" which means a round bowl. Urlis were used in home for cooking and in Ayurveda to make medicines. Now Urlis are used as a decorative bowl to float flowers which is a part of South Indian tradition. Measures: 32" diameter 9.5" height.
