19th Century Minton Majolica Blue Aesthetic Jardiniere Christopher Dresser

About

Minton Majolica floor jardinière in the Chinese style decorated in Persian blue glaze, circa 1875 The Victorian London porcelain retailer, Daniell and Son displayed a pair of these jardinieres on their Stand at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition in 1876 (see image) Minton introduced this new 'electric' turquoise blue glaze at the Vienna Exhibition in 1873 and named it 'Persian blue'. Joseph Theodore Deck, the French ceramicist also used an almost identical Persian blue glaze. This colour was especially successful in America being displayed in the conservatories and hallways of the Gilded Homes. Although to date no documentary evidence has come to light, there are many elements included in this piece that suggests Christopher dresser was the designer. The grotesques in particular are similar to illustrations in Dresser's publication 'Principles in Design'. In images #9, we can see two similar jardinieres (one behind the chair) in the house of Orson Desaix Munn, Mountain Venue, Llewellyn Park, West Orange, New Jersey. This is an absolutely wonderful striking object. The turquoise Persian blue is electric and as good as the greatest glazer of the 19th century Theodore Deck.
