19th Century Yellow Elephant Jardiniere Vase Ault Arts & Crafts

About

A rare William Ault Planter in the form of an Imperial yellow glazed elephant in ceremonial dress, the howdah forming the opening of the planter. circa 1890. Although there is no record to suggest this is a design by Dr. Christopher Dresser, some of Dressers most famous designs were manufactured by Ault. A very similar elephant appears in an Adult advert published c.1885. The elephant and ceremonial howdah is typical of Victorian design reflecting the interest in wild animal made famous by newly published natural history books. The Indian elephant was particularly popular as a result of The British Empire and Queen Victorian being the Empress of India. The Imperial yellow borrowed from Chinese ceramics was also a very poplar colour alongside Persian blue and a deep aubergine, all of which were glazes that Minton introduced in 1872.
