Christine Roland
Christine Roland is a Danish artist, who hand-builds objects and lamps. Every piece is carved, cut, rolled and bent by hand from stoneware and porcelain.
Roland received her degree in Design from Universität Der Künste, Berlin in 2009.
She lives and works between Berlin and Denmark. Roland's work has a direct purity and usefulness, while celebrating the raw nature of what ceramics are. The collateral dents, holes and imperfections embellish the beauty of material and tactility of the form. In all of Roland's work one has the sense of the ancient Nordic traditions that she has inherited, some of her dark stoneware pieces have the feeling that they were dug out of the earth, while delicate white porcelain lamps with hanging elements can feel as if they just bloomed. This ongoing dialogue between the ancient and the contemporary is essential to Roland's work. The singularity of her vision and the dedication to unique works made by hand, remind us of how the things we use everyday bear witness to our lives. She has had numerous exhibitions in art and design galleries internationally, most recently in Berlin, London, Paris, Amsterdam and Switzerland.
