Gustave-Joseph Chéret Terracotta Jardiniere Urn

About the Item

Finely executed urn by sculptor Joseph Chéret (French, 1838-1894) inset with period aluminum liner for flowers. Epitomizes the mid-19th century Second Empire style with French Renaissance Revival motifs including strapwork cartouches and dancing putti. Signed "Joseph Chéret" on base. Chéret began his career as a principal assistant to sculptor Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse, whose daughter he married in 1868. He became a member of the Societe nationale des beaux-arts in 1894 and was acclaimed for his small figural groups, vases and Jardinieres realized in a neo-Baroque style as exemplified by this this piece.
