Italian Grand Tour Bronze Askos Ewer after the Roman Antique Original

About

A very fine 19th century Italian Grand Tour bronze ‘Askos’ after the Roman antique original excavated at Herculaneum. The base of the handle showing a winged putto standing on a scallop shell holding a cornucopia, the gadrooned rim with two exquisitely detailed goats, behind them two long cornucopia extending downward. A identical example is illustrated in the Chiurazzi Foundry catalogue described as a ‘Pot au Lait’, thought to be a container for goat's milk.
