Renato Bassoli Pair of Glazed Ceramic Sassi Vases, 1950s

About the Item

A pair of glazed earthenware Sassi (stones) sculptures in shades of Mediterranean blue and sea foam green by Renato Bassoli (1915-1982). Bassoli was a multi-disciplined artist with earlier career credits in both graphic and set design before moving on to sculpture, jewelry, furniture, and ceramics. The Sassi series, arguably that for which he's most instantly recognized, was first exhibited in 1959 at Il Sestante Gallery in Milan, and most recently in 2015 at the Triennale Design Museum. The simple yet compelling forms have scattered piercings — a striking parallel to the Concetto Spaziale ceramics of Lucio Fontana — and the glazes Bassoli used were from the celebrated French pottery region of Vallauris. Both of these examples are signed to the underside as shown and are in fine condition with only minor signs of age and wear. Priced as a pair but can be acquired individually, please inquire. Measures: Blue 4.5" x 4" x 2" tall Green 3.75" x 1.75" x 2" tall A translated excerpt from a 1963 issue of Artecasa magazine: "Mostly, they are flower vases. High-fired ceramic vases, some with glossy surfaces, others opaque. They are bowls, cylinders of different diameters and heights, polished stones like those collected on river banks, their tops sprinkled with flowers. Different sized holes grouped and arranged as decoration with dried branches or cut flowers placed in them to create a sort of do-it-yourself Ikebana. However, these vases shouldn't just be considered practical objects, but as sculptures, one-of-a-kind pieces, decorative objects suitable for the home and modern furnishings."
