1956 "Farsta" Vase by Wilhelm Kåge

About

By Wilhelm Kåge, student of Matisse, grand old man of Swedish ceramics, and creator of the 20th century's greatest series of studio ceramics: his famous Farsta collection of the 1940s and 1950s. This vase is a superb example of the line, with its thick walls, incised abstract decoration, and complex glazing. Made in 1956, the assymmetrical pattern of trapezoids constitutes a motif Kåge returned to in his Farsta pieces again and again in the 1950s. (This reflected a design trend at the time, which can also be seen in a table lamp by Guido Gambone that we are offering. I believe that this 1950s motif originated with the architect Le Corbusier, in particular the fenestration of his chapel at Ronchamp and of the childrens' schools that crowned his housing blocks, beginning with the famous first one, the Unite d'Habitation at Marseilles.) This Farsta vase is fully signed, with all of the appropriate impressed marks.
