Aldo Londi for Bitossi Majolica Bud Vase and Dresser Box with Lid, Italy

About the Item

Set of vintage majolica bud ewer vase and dresser box with lid features highly textured surfaces with complex teal glaze; the pieces are decorated with abstract flowers and leaves in relief. On the vase the flowers are hand-painted red, orange, and blue; the twisted handle is done in yellow, orange, and brown colors that appear to be sponged over each other, creating fascinating color shifts, and the rim is accented in sapphire blue. The box is adorned with 3 white flowers on the lid that surround a yellow and brown bow-shaped handle; please not that 2 of the flowers have one of the petals removed before the glaze was applied. The edge of the lid is decorated with brown border, and the inner surfaces are done in dark pink of white sponge glaze. The vase was created by Aldo Londi for Bitossi and is signed in Londi's own hand with his distinctive 'Ztaly' mark, letter B, and the model number; the box is signed with the regular ITALY mark and the model number. The pieces are missing the distributor label, but they were probably created for either Raymor or Rosenthal Netter.
