Marie Zimmermann Sterling Silver Vase

About the Item

An American sterling silver vase with a flaring, wire-wrapped rim by Marie Zimmermann (1879-1972), a noted metalsmith, jeweler and designer active during the opening decades of the 20th century. The vase comes from the silversmith's estate and dates circa 1920 while Zimmermann maintained a workshop and showroom at the National Arts Club at Gramercy Park in New York City. The vase is substantial, weighing 20.3 oz / 576 g and in good condition with shallow scratches, particularly on base. Marked M. ZIMMERMANN / MAKER / STERLING over Zimmermann's MZ artist's cipher underfoot, measuring 5.13 in. Height x 7 in. Diameter (at rim). The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City holds the largest collection of Marie Zimmermann's designs, making their first acquisition in 1922. Examples of Zimmermann's designs in metalwork and jewelry design are also in the permanent collections of The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Edsel & Eleanor Ford House, The Art Institute of Chicago, The Wolfsonian-Florida International University and the Columbus Museum of Art.
