Ancient Daunian Vessel, 6th-5th Century BC, Apulia, Italy

About

The Daunians (Greek: ?a?????, translit. Daúnioi; Latin: Daunii) were a tribe that inhabited northern Apulia in classical antiquity. Under Hellenistic influence, Daunians became best known for their refined ceramic tradition. Archeological artefacts, like the one presented here, made extensive use of geometric symbols and other graphemes against a characteristically cream-colored background. Apulia, 6th-5th century BC. Minimal restorations.
