An Art Nouveau Awaji vase, crafted on Japan’s Awaji Island in the early 1900s, reflecting the region’s celebrated ceramic tradition, known for bold decorative forms and experimental glazes that found wide appeal during the Art Nouveau era. This example is formed in a stylised meiping, or plum-shaped silhouette, with balanced proportions and a sculptural profile characteristic of Awaji ware produced during this period. Crafted in clay, the vase is finished in a lustrous green drip glaze that flows softly across the surface, creating tonal variation and subtle depth. The glaze displays a gentle iridescence when viewed under changing light, enhancing the curvature of the form without distracting from its restrained elegance. Two delicately curved side handles rise from the shoulder, lending the piece a refined architectural symmetry while reinforcing its organic Art Nouveau character. Awaji pottery became especially admired in the late 19th and early 20th centuries for its innovative glazing techniques and expressive ceramic forms, many of which were produced for export as well as domestic appreciation.
