Austrian Jugendstil Glass Vase Argus Decoration circa 1902 Johann Loetz Witwe

About the Item

Austrian Jugendstil Glass Vase Johann Loetz Witwe with Argus decoration PG 2/351 ca. 1902 The “Argus” decoration is one of the most popular variants in the family of Phenomen Genres and was created in 1902. With its inserted eyes of silver oxide and finely spun silver crumbs, this in-house design is one of the most technically sophisticated decor variants. When creating this very attractive design, the Bohemian glass manufactory clearly borrowed from the Secessionist style, which represented the aesthetic avant-garde in the group around Gustav Klimt in Vienna at the time. The spun silver threads appear here as a variant of the popular decoration PG 2/351 due to the particular shape of the vase, but instead of the silver particles seeming to float on a moving water surface, the bluish silver threads on the neck of the vase are elongated. The decoration is particularly beautiful on the hazelnut-brown ground, which gradually runs down to a “papillon”-like olive green.
