Chimney Charred Vase in "Barro Preto" Handcrafted in Portugal by Origin Made

About the Item

The Chimney vase is part of the collection "Charred Vases", five unique forms made in the dying Portuguese art of Barro Preto. Buried and fired in an underground pit called a Soenga, this process of smothering the ceramic removes oxygen and results in a non-homogenous texture of black, grey and earth tones. A vanishing tradition – there are few artisans left who have the knowledge to produce objects in Barro Preto. Together with João Lourenço, Gabriel Tan wishes to rekindle this heritage. The barro preto is a non-homogenous texture of black, grey and earth tones. Material: Barro Preto Due to this material and handcrafted process, the vases might present some different shades and color variations. The final texture, consistency and color of the piece depends on the firing conditions and how each vase is being placed inside the pit. All of our pieces are uniquely handcrafted and no one is the same as the other. Observations of such differences across products or orders does not constitute a basis for order cancellation or product returns. Designed by Gabriel Tan, made by João Lourenço. The Craftsman Working from his atelier in Barcelos, João Lourenço is a ceramic artist and master potter, one of the few craftsmen remaining who is experienced in producing objects in the traditional technique of Barro Preto. He also makes objects in terracotta, pasta greis chamotada and exhibits his hand made ceramics at local craft fairs. A man dedicated to his craft, full of positivity and openness, João was the first craftsman we collaborated with and fully embodies the spirit of Origin. The Designer Gabriel Tan Studio is a design practice working across the borders of craft, culture and technology. Exploring new ways to interpret luxury and break archetypes, the studio works on product and furniture design for international clients including Blå Station, Design Within Reach, The Conran Shop, Ishinomaki Lab, TAKATA Lemnos and Authentics. Gabriel Tan also creative directs the brands Ariake and Turn. Aside from his design work, he has guest lectured at Lasalle College of the Arts, Pratt Institute, National University of Singapore, the University of Oregon and also served as a jury member at the Cannes Lions Festival.
