Contemporary American Wooden Vase, Spalted Maple, Handmade, Sculpture, In Stock

About

Part of Richard Haining's Stacked Collection, this vessel was made using reclaimed Spalted Maple salvaged from the offcuts of Brooklyn Museum's seating, reception desks, and signage located in the glass pavilion lobby entrance. The wood's natural coloring shows off tones range all over the place from sandy yellows and blondes, to pink and deep browns with black striations throughout, kinda reminiscent of a light toned marble. There is no stain involved. As with all of the pieces in my Stacked collection, this vessel has not been turned on a lathe. It was hand-built hollow, STACKED piece by piece, layer by layer, all the while controlling the wall thickness as well as the profile. The scalloped shape was created as a result of the building process, intentionally placing each piece to create the profile. If you had a little camera and light, and peered into the interior, you would see the inverse of these indentations. The one of a kind patterns created by the assemblage of shards of wood achieve a quality reminiscent of mosaic tile work and basketry. Once complete, the exterior surface was sculpted smooth using a variety of hand held tools, and is finished with a hand rubbed custom varnish, which is intern sealed with a custom beeswax final topcoat. The result is a finely honed finish with slight undulations, similar to that of hand-built ceramics. This vessel is a one-of-a-kind art objects.

About The Maker

Richard Haining

Richard Haining

View Profile
Richard Haining is a Brooklyn-based studio furniture maker and artist. Raised in Atlanta and educated at the Rhode Island School of Design, he is committed to responsible design that is elegantly hand-crafted with a modern sensibility. Blurring the line between function and fine art, Richard works with designers, trade professionals, and residential clients alike; custom tailoring each piece to suit each client’s specific needs. Whether creating a decorative vase, a custom cabinet, or executing a client's design, Richard’s meticulous attention to detail results in finished pieces that are both utilitarian and beautiful. Much of his current work is directly influenced by the over-abundance of waste and scrap wood being discarded around him. He finds beauty in the knots, century-old nail holes, mineral stains, and other “defects” that are part of that tree’s history, a fingerprint of time since passed, a natural beauty to be celebrated. These locally salvaged remnants became the building blocks for his ‘Stacked’ collection of decorative vessels and furniture pieces. The one of a kind patterns created by the tiny stacked wooden pieces achieve a quality reminiscent of mosaic tile work, basketry, and ceramics. In a world that tends to shun manual labor, Richard finds pure joy in the art of working with his hands. The ritual of creating each individual piece is a very gratifying experience for him, and it is his wish that the recipients of his work experience the same delight.
