Contemporary Japanese Red Blue Black Porcelain Vase by Master Artist
About the Item
Extraordinary contemporary Japanese hand painted decorative porcelain vase, an exclusive signature masterpiece in blue and red by highly acclaimed master porcelain artist of the Imari-Arita region of Japan and recipient of numerous awards for his exceptional application of gold and platinum on porcelain. In 2016, the British Museum added a work by this artist to its collection of contemporary Japanese porcelain – a large lidded jar in the Imari-Arita polychrome enamel tradition.
This unique vase in brilliant red and blue features the highly auspicious “magic mallet of good fortune,” equivalent to the Horn of plenty in Western lore. Held in the hands of one of the Seven Lucky Deities of Japan’s Buddhist pantheon, the magic mallet is said to deliver treasure and sustenance in plenty with every swing.
The vase showcases a dense mosaic of extremely intricate patterns created by finely drawn lines of gold. This produces a stunning dream-like illusion of a “transparent” canvas on which fully articulated magic mallets appear to be floating. To add to the elegance of the whole piece, the base and neck are decorated in a rich palette of dark blue, red and black, enhanced by the generous use of gold.
"Fired-on gold,” the artist's signature style highlights unique techniques for incorporating gold and platinum into the hand painting and multiple firing processes that yield a stunningly opulent look. The polychrome overglaze is fired at 800 degrees, followed by the application of gold and platinum that are fired at slightly lower temperature to maintain the luster of the precious metals. As a result, a single piece may undergo as many as 5-10 firings. The artist's profile is available upon request.
This stunning gilded porcelain vase comes in a custom made wooden case signed by the artist.
