Glass "Siren" Bud Vase or Candleholder by Nanny Still for Lasi Oy, 1955

About

There are two known examples of the "Siren" glass vessels by Finnish designer Nanny Stills. The one featured here and the other is in the permanent collection of MOMA. In 1955 the Finnish Minister of Commerce and Industry travelled to the United States and in course gifted a siren vase done in black glass to MOMA (quoted as a vase, but possibly a candleholder). This piece executed in clear glass was gifted to government official in the commerce dept. in West Virginia, which during the mid-20th was a center for American glass production. Exceedingly rare, early work by Still (Nanny Still-McKinney) represents one of her best designs produced for Riihimäen Lasi Oy. Signed with etched signature "N. Still Riihimäen Lasi Oy" on the base. This modernist object measures a petite 2.25" tall and 3.5" wide. It could be used as either a bud vase or a candle holder (it's aperture matching the tall slender Danish candles popular in the mid-century era).
