About the Item
A subtle and beautiful Japanese bronze hanging flower vase, kakehana, Meiji Period, circa 1900, Japan.
The slim and elegant vessel of cast bronze in the form of a stalk of segmented bamboo. The segment lines cast in low relief with beading, simulating the nodes. A simple leafed branch falls downwards at a graceful angle. While a small and whimsical cicada is cast in high relief just above the leaves. The cicada beautifully cast with fine detail, especially to the body and wings.
Bamboo is a symbol of resilience and a symbol of Summer, when part of the Four Gentlemen, or a symbol of the New Year when part of the Three Friends of Winter.
Cicada are beloved insects in Japan. Associated with resurrection and rebirth, they are symbols of longevity and immortality.
Kakehana are hanging wall vases for use in Japanese flower arranging, ikebana. Usually crafted of bamboo or pottery, bronze ones are rare.
The bronze of a deep chocolate brown with attractive red copper undertones.
A small indentation to the back for hanging. Also with an etched collection number to the base.

A large and remarkable Japanese lacquer and marquetry decorated table or hanging cabinet, Meiji Period, circa 1900, Japan.
The cabinet of square form surmounted by an arched top with upturned scroll ends. Eight drawers of various shapes and sizes adorn the exterior of the cabinet. Doors on either side open to reveal interiors fitted with cubby holes over a single drawer.
The front of the cabinet is decorated with scattered geometric marquetry patterns of various design utilizing contrasting woods, including hardwood and burl, all in the yosegi zaiku technique.
The sides and top of the cabinet of black lacquer with maki-e lacquer painted designs of flowers and grasses. The back of plain black lacquer with two hoops for hanging.
The interior of the cabinet doors and the interior drawers decorated in the wakasa lacquer technique, with gold rhomboid accents against a polished black lacquer ground.
Overall a striking accent piece and nice example of Japanese yosegi...

An exquisite pair of Japanese mixed metal bronze hibachi with idyllic landscape scenes, Meiji period (1868-1912), late 19th or early 20th century, Japan.
The hibachi of generous proportions, with a high, slightly splayed foot, a short, narrow waist, and a large and wide cylindrical body. The body decorated in the mixed metal technique. The bronze carved and set with inlays of copper and silver to create wonderful landscape scenes. A pair of animal mask handles to the sides. Each hibachi with a cast signature reading ?? (Toyomi?) to the underside.
One side of each hibachi depicting an evening scene, with scholars walking about a mountain retreat, replete with a waterfall, pavilions, pagodas, and pine trees, all shimmering under a full moon.
The other side of the hibachi depicting a daytime scene, with a view of similar pavilions, pagoda, and pine, though with boats also visible in the distance.
Copper inlay has been used for the roofs and the trunks of the pine trees. Silver inlay has been used for the pine needles, scholars, building supports, water, boats, moon, as well as the distant mountains.
