Japanese Green Brown Porcelain Vase by Contemporary Master Artist

About the Item

Extraordinary Japanese contemporary decorative porcelain vase, intricately hand painted in a stunning pattern in Kutani green, blue, brown and yellow on a beautifully shaped ovoid porcelain body in white, a signed masterpiece by highly acclaimed award-winning third generation master of a Kutani kiln with a history of more than 140 years. His life and works were celebrated in a 2002 exhibition at the Smithsonian Institution’s Sackler Gallery. Notwithstanding his lofty achievements, he adamantly refuses the title of “master artist” and insists on calling himself a “mere artisan” committed to faithfully carrying forward the themes, techniques and the five colors (green, yellow, purple, deep blue, red) of the traditional Kutani palette. He adheres to the traditional “single-firing technique” where sharply defined lines and contours are discarded in favor of a soft and subtle melding of colors and patterns. “What sets a masterpiece apart,” Tamekichi explains, “is how close different colors come to spilling on to each other without actually doing so.” This artist's uncompromising adherence to tradition takes him as far as to maintain a limited supply of “old Kutani clay” used in creating special orders for historical pieces. The impurities in the old clay produce a “dusty beige hue” with random dark spots of iron oxide. The glaze is appropriately thickened to seal the impurities and prevent pockmarks, allowing the observer to meditate on the mysteries of random speckling. This magnificent piece showcases grape vines and round panels with striking patterns, and traditional patterns decorating the top and base of this piece add another layer of beauty and interest that attract the viewers to get close to explore the details. This hand painted porcelain vase comes in a custom made wooden case signed by the artist. Dimensions: H 10.5 in D 9.5 in.

Exquisite Japanese contemporary Kutani porcelain vase, intricately hand painted on an elegantly shaped porcelain body, a signed masterpiece by the third generation master porcelain artist in traditional Kutani. His grandfather started as a porcelain artist 140 years ago faithfully protecting the characteristics of traditional Kutani fine porcelain. The creator of this piece, the third generation artist, continues to keep this tradition alive and is among a very small number of Kutani porcelain artists who still create traditional Kutani pieces. Traditional Kutani porcelain called Kutani Ware has a history of over 360 years. The spirit of Kutani ware emerges as highly skilled craftsmen draw hairline images on white porcelain, which are tempered with heavily applied ornamental glazes. These glazes, when fired in the kiln, are converted into five colors of enamel, green, yellow, blue, purple and red. When they are combined with the bold designs and free-flawing drawings, elaborately worked pieces are created. This stunning piece depicts two large and two small scalloped panels with flower and bird motifs on white background. The panels are surrounded by intricately designed scrolling vines motif in deep green. A band in traditional Kutani green...
