Large Japanese Contemporary Green Purple Blue Porcelain Vase by Master Artist

About the Item

Unique contemporary large Japanese gilded and intricately hand painted decorative porcelain vase on an attractive ovoid shape in textured dark blue and flora pattern (Karakusa) with flowers and foliage in stunning green and purple, a signed masterpiece by highly acclaimed master porcelain artist and recipient of numerous awards for his exceptional porcelain work and his unique gold and platinum work on porcelain. This striking piece in a textured deep blue background showcases flowers and foliage in mesmerizing shades of green and purple floating over an exquisite ovoid shaped body. The intricate gold details and the vase’s delicately scalloped mouth highlights the elegance of this remarkable piece. "Fired-on gold," the artist's signature style highlights unique techniques for incorporating gold and platinum into the hand painting and multiple firing processes that yield a stunningly opulent look. The polychrome overglaze is fired at 800 degrees, followed by the application of gold and platinum that are fired at slightly lower temperature to maintain the luster of the precious metals. As a result, a single piece may undergo as many as 5-10 firings. This stunning gilded Porcelain Vase comes in a custom made wooden case signed by the artist. Dimensions: H 12.5 in, D 12.75 in.

  • Japanese Contemporary Green Purple Porcelain Vase by Master Artist
    Located in Takarazuka, JP
Exquisite Japanese contemporary Kutani porcelain vase, intricately hand painted on an elegantly shaped porcelain body, a signed masterpiece by the third generation master porcelain artist in traditional Kutani. His grandfather started as a porcelain artist 140 years ago faithfully protecting the characteristics of traditional Kutani fine porcelain. The creator of this piece, the third generation artist, continues to keep this tradition alive and is among a very small number of Kutani porcelain artists who still create traditional Kutani pieces. Traditional Kutani porcelain called Kutani Ware has a history of over 360 years. The spirit of Kutani ware emerges as highly skilled craftsmen draw hairline images on white porcelain, which are tempered with heavily applied ornamental glazes. These glazes, when fired in the kiln, are converted into five colors of enamel, green, yellow, blue, purple and red. When they are combined with the bold designs and free-flawing drawings, elaborately worked pieces are created. This stunning piece depicts two large and two small scalloped panels with flower and bird motifs on white background. The panels are surrounded by intricately designed scrolling vines motif in deep green. A band in traditional Kutani green...

  • Rare and Large Japanese Porcelain Vase Makuzu Kozan
    By Makuzu Kozan
    Located in Atlanta, GA
A striking blue and white vase from the studio of Japanese Potter Makuzu Kozan, also known as Miyagawa Kozan (1842–1916), one of the most established and collected ceramist from Meiji Period. Born as Miyagawa Toranosuke, Kozan established his pottery studio in Yokohama around 1870s and later became one of the appointed artist to the Japanese Imperial household. His work was exhibited in many international fairs that the Meiji government participated at the turn of the century and won many grand prizes. With an impressively large size, this vase was likely made and reserved as a presentation piece for one of the many expositions the studio participated in the early 20th century. It was decorated with underglaze cobalt blue using the novel technique developed by Kozan called Fuki-e (the blow painting), in order to achieve the striking dimensional literary landscape known as "Mountain and Water". Being one of the most creative ceramists, Kozan started experimenting with new chemical colors from the West in the format of his porcelain glaze around 1880s. New colors allowed him to create underglaze designs that appeared bright, smooth and glossy. He even invented his own receipt of cobalt blue to achieve a much brighter yet softer shade, as evident on this vase. To create landscape that is realistic and dimensional, more common in the western paintings, he was inspired by the native Japanese ink painting technique developed around 1900 by Yokoyama Taikan...
