Loetz Schule Kolo Moser Candia Silberiris, circa 1903

About

The Silberiris decoration was developed circa 1899 and celebrated considerable successes at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900. The Viennese designers also discovered this simple and strongly iridescent decoration and used it frequently. In 1899, shortly after his friend and colleague Josef Hoffman, Koloman Moser held a professorship at the Vienna School of Arts & Crafts. Moser's task was not only to teach, but also to involve his pupils in his work. This is how the label "Schule Prof. Kolo Moser" was founded. In this creative phase, master and pupils worked side by side and created a variety of designs together. The small silver iris vase, which was a commissioned work for the glass publisher E. Bakalowits Sohne, was designed in this creative period. The slim, upwardly striving corpus, which tapers slightly at the mouth, offers an ample surface for the unfolding of the decoration. The strong iridescence stresses the interplay of the merging colors. The volute-shaped handles serve as a contrast, continuing the color palette of the body on a darker surface. Bib: Lit: E. Ploil, “Glass and Ceramics”, in: Ch. Witt Döring (ed.), „Koloman Moser. Designing modern Vienna 1897-1907“, Prestel, Munich 2013, p. 246-287 E. Ploil, H. Ricke e.a. (ed.), „Loetz – Böhmisches Glas 1880-1940“, vol. II, Musterschnitte, Prestel, Munich 1989, paper pattern 85/5154, p. 311.
