Marcel Wanders Porcelain "Sponge Vase" for Droog Design, 1997

About

An iconic "sponge vase" by the modernist Dutch designer Marcel Wanders (b. 1963) for Droog Design. Known for his highly imaginative designs and innovative use of materials, this work is created by infusing a natural sponge with liquid clay. It is then dried and fired in a kiln. The sponge then dissolves leaving a beautiful porcelain form. This is an early, vintage example of this vase in very good condition. Signed: Wanders Wonders. The Italian architect Andrea Branzi notes in Wanders Wonders Design for a New Age, "The work of Marcel Wanders is placed within that range of researches that investigate about a new relationship between technology and nature".
