Martin Freyer Plissé Porcelaine Noire Vase for Rosenthal, Germany, 1970s

About the Item

Martin Freyer Plissé Porcelaine Noire vase for Rosenthal Studio-Line, Germany, 1970s. This sculptural black porcelain vase is part of Rosenthal’s celebrated Studio-Line production and shows the strong formal language that made Freyer’s designs so distinctive within German postwar design. The vase has a softly swelling silhouette with a narrow foot and wide open rim. Its surface is covered with finely modelled vertical pleats, giving the piece a strong sense of rhythm, depth and movement. The relief catches the light differently across the body, so the black surface shifts between deep shadow, soft reflection and matte texture. Executed in Rosenthal Porcelaine Noire, the vase has a deep black bisque porcelain exterior with a more reflective glazed interior. The contrast between the restrained monochrome colour and the tactile pleated form makes the piece highly effective as a standalone decorative object, especially in minimalist, modernist or collector interiors. The Plissé vase by Martin Freyer is a strong example of Rosenthal Studio-Line’s experimental approach during the 1970s, when porcelain was treated not only as a decorative medium but also as a sculptural material. The design recalls textile folds, architectural fluting and Op Art surface effects, while remaining elegant and balanced in proportion.
