Mason's Ironstone Vase in Floral Japan Pattern, English Georgian, circa 1815
About the Item
This is a rare, very early ironstone vase, in a typical hand painted Japan pattern, made by the Mason's factory in the early 19th century, Circa 1815.
The vase has a baluster shape raised on a circular foot with two moulded, spurred side handles and a slightly everted rim.
It is decorated in a typical hand painted "Japan" pattern with an orange flower having green leaves, growing from a rocky base. This is a beautifully hand painted pattern with strong enamels of mazarine blue, burnt orange, pink and different shades of green highlighted with richly hand-painted gold gilded detail typical of the free flowing style of the earliest Mason's pieces. There is also an inner border pattern as this piece would not have had a lid.
The vase is marked with the impressed circular mark stating " Patent Ironstone China" which is probably Mason's earliest impressed mark.
We date this fine piece to circa 1813 to 1815, which is a very early piece as Mason's only started producing Ironstone in 1813.

- Very Rare Mason's Ironstone Bottle Vase in Chinese Dragon Pattern, circa 1820By Mason's IronstoneLocated in Lincoln, LincolnshireThis is a very rare ironstone vase, in the Chinese style, all hand painted in the coloured dragon pattern, made by the Mason's factory in the early 19th century. Both the vase shape and the pattern are very rare. The vase has a bottle shape with a fairly tall neck, having two dolphin head handles, with attached loops. (NOTES ON SHAPE This vase style is a copy of a much earlier Chinese bronze vase shape produced in the Ming, Hongwu period of 1368 - 1398, which had similar decorative animal head side handles with loops. ( See the book Chinese Ceramics by He Li, page 216, published by Thames & Hudson. ). Also On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 204; The square handles and rings illustrate the metal origins of the shape of the vase. Similar examples have been excavated in Chinese tombs dating to the fifteenth and sixteenth century, suggesting that the shape was particularly popular at that time.) This vase is beautifully hand decorated in a more complex variant of the Coloured Chinese Dragon pattern, with strong coloured enamels depicting a green dragon on one side and a pink dragon...Category
