Mason's Ironstone Vase Hand Painted in Landscape and Prunus Pattern, circa 1830

About

This is a good baluster vase made by Mason's ironstone, Lane Delph, England in the first half of the 19th century, circa 1830. The vase is well potted of hexagonal baluster form with a shaped wavy rim. This is a fairly rare shape. The pattern is called Scroll Landscape and Prunus, and shows a small central scroll containing a Chinese landscape surrounded by colorful flowers against a burnt orange background. This pattern is shown on two sides between dark mazarine cobalt blue sides with gilded floral scrolls. The upper section is painted a bottle green with further gilded floral decoration. The pattern is hand painted in typical bold enamels over a printed outline and is illustrated on page 82 of "A Guide to Mason's Patent Ironstone Patterns" by The Mason's Collectors' Club. A similar vase of this style and pattern is also shown on Page 31 of Mason's Samlesbury Hall sale catalogue of 1986. The vase is fully marked to the base with a brown, round crown Mason's printed mark, dating this piece to circa 1830.
