Mid-Century Modern Blown Glass Vase, Vetro Verde di Empoli, Italy, 1960s

About the Item

Produced in Italy around the 1960s, this green blown glass vase from the Empoli region is defined by its sculptural pedestal form and applied glass detailing. The body rises from a rounded, spherical base before extending upward and outward into a gently splayed rim, creating a confident and architectural silhouette. Formed in vibrant vetro verde, the glass has a glossy, lustrous surface that enhances the depth of color. The upper section flares outward in a controlled curve, likely hand-manipulated while hot, giving the rim a subtle asymmetry and softness. Each side is decorated with a vertical row of applied glass punts, or button-like elements, adding dimensional relief against the smooth body and reinforcing its handcrafted character. The base retains its original pontil break, visible to the underside, consistent with traditional blown glass techniques of the period. Condition is very good for age and use. There are no chips or cracks. Some surface wear to the glass body is present, in keeping with age, but the vase remains highly presentable and structurally sound. Height: 25.5 cm (10.04 in) Width: 17.5 cm (6.89 in) Depth: 12 cm (4.72 in) A distinctive example of mid-century Empoli-region glass, combining bold form with applied decorative elements.
