Monumental German Porcelain Vase or Umbrella Stand by M Frey for Kaiser Germany

About the Item

A vintage circa 1970's monumental floor vase or umbrella stand by Manfred Frey for Kaiser West Germany. This large porcelain vase stands at just under 22 inches in height. The design has an op art feel to it and is complimented by the matte finish. Some information on Mr. Frey from the collector's weekly website, "Some Kaiser items carry the artist signature M. Frey which belonged to the designer and artist Manfred Frey." While there is little biographical information on Mr. Frey, I did manage to find a site in German. Thanks to some online translating, I can share with you a few tidbits about Mr. Frey's long and illustrious career as a designer, artist, Judoka and ballroom dancer. Mr. Frey was born in Bamberg, Germany on October 22, 1940. At the age of 15 in 1955, "Manfred Frey begins an apprenticeship as a mold maker at the Upper Franconian Porcelain manufactory Alboth + Kaiser in Hausen. The porcelain factory goes to a porcelain mill set up on the Main in 1908 (Royal Porcelain factory Silbermann) back. The company was founded in 1938 by Alboth and Emperor taken over from Kronach. Alboth and Kaiser thus received under other things, the right to a royal crown in the coat of arms and thus also in the own brand of porcelain. Manfred Frey's place of study, the former "Weiler Hausen" is located directly on the upper reaches of the Main and is now a district of the spa town of Bad Staffelstein. Staffelstein becomes the center of life and the boy's home." It is also at this time that the young Mr, Frey is training Judo with intensity and focus - the same as he would look at design later in life. Mr. Frey then moves to Switzerland at the age of 18, "After the official completion of his apprenticeship in the form of the "acquittal" of the 18-year-old goes through the responsible guild as a journeyman mold maker. Manfred Frey moves to Switzerland, where he headed the company's model department. He establishes and manages "Rheintal-Porzellanmanufaktur" in Sevelen, Switzerland." In 1963 Mr. Frey returns to Germany from Switzerland and "completes his product material and design knowledge through a degree in renowned "Johann Friedrich Böttger Institute", a higher technical college and central training production site of the porcelain industry in Selb." By 1966, Mr. Frey had completed his studies and was receiving lucrative job offers - all of which he turned down in order to return to his original place of training back in 1955. It was here at Kaiser where Mr. Frey's designs took shape, form and began to receive notice for their sophistication. In 1970 Mr. Frey was appointed as 'First Modeller' or Chief Designer. As the years go by, Mr. Frey becomes interested in ballroom dancing in 1980. In 2008, Mr. Frey 'retires' but continues to do freelance design work for Kaiser until 2015. In his retirement, Mr. Frey established a private atelier where he continues to create, design and produce gorgeous and sophisticated works of art in bisque porcelain.
