About the Item

Pair of ceramics vases, Art Nouveau period, green enameled base, with decors of Iris branches d'iris orange, violet and gold, signed under the base Clément Massier Golfe Juan, AM. Clément Massier is considered as the founder, at the beginning of the 20th century of the modern ceramic industry of Vallauris. Of a creative nature, Clément Massier (1844 Vallauris - 1917 Golf-Juan) was first working in 1856 with his father Jacques (1801-1871). He was introduced to pottery by Gaetano Gandolfi, an Italian master hired by his father. Gandolfi will be the initiator of several techniques, among which enamelled faience, which will make the reputation of the Massier Company. From then on, the production will be renowned for its originality, abandoning the utilitarian pottery in favour of an exclusively artistic creation. The three Massier Companies, led by brothers Clément and Delphin and cousin Jérôme, will soon be one of Vallauris' major productions. A ceramic contractor At the death of his father, Clément first partnered with his brother Delphin Massier before eventually creating his own factory in 1883 outside Vallauris. Its location in Golfe-Juan, on the road linking Monaco, Nice and Cannes will enable him to reach wealthy and cosmopolitan tourists and benefit from the proximity of the railway to ship its manufactured products. A year later, his company already employs 120 workers. A real network of trade is set up thanks to the distribution of detailed catalogs in France and abroad. Clément Massier becomes a real entrepreneur by opening sales outlets in his own region, but also in the capital and in Germany. In 1887 he became official supplier of the English Crown. Clément also works with renowned artists such as Scottish sculptor Alexandre Munroe, ceramist Félix Optat Milet trained in Sèvres, sculptor James Vilbert, painter Jules Scalbert. But it will be especially the artist Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer who will work for Clément Massier from 1887-1895 as artistic director of the manufacture. He will introduce Massier to the Hispano-Moorish ceramics of his collection and their splendid iridescent reflections. We also find Persian and Arab motifs on the first production of ceramics iridescent Massier.
