Pair of French Louis XVI Style Gilt Vases with Bisque Swags, circa 1870

About the Item

With its Neoclassical elements, this pair of French porcelain vases is in the style of Louis XVI. Crafted circa 1870, the stunning details of the swags are sharpened by the rich coloration of the hand painted elements and gilding. The upper section of the loutrophoros form vases have been gilded, matching the goblet shaped bases that rest on square black marble bases. Both vases are adorned with a pure white bisque floral swag that runs beneath a pair of volute foliate handles. The main bodies beneath have been painted a matte cream and embellished with faint gold fluting that has been filled with open roundels. There are also some painted blue motifs, such as a winged angel mascaron above a tasseled drapery, grape clusters, ribbons, and roundels, most of which are Neoclassical in nature. Our pair of Louis XVI style gilt vases with bisque swags have vivid colors and intricate, minute details that are difficult to portray in photos. They would look amazing displayed on any table surface or in a vitrine or open-faced cabinet.

    Located in Dallas, TX
This pair of brightly silvered bronze chenets are from France (circa 1900), in the style of Louis XVI, as noted by the presence of laurel leaf festoons and pots au feu finials. They were used in well-appointed homes, not only to decorate the front of the fireplace, but to prevent burning logs from rolling onto priceless rugs, should they break free of the fire. Often seen in natural wrought iron, or gilded in gold (in finer homes), it is unusual to see them in silvered bronze. Each finial has two pots au feu of different sizes and orientation adorned with a laurel swag. The larger fire pot...
