Pair of Highly Decorated Rococo Style French Porcelain Vases, Att. Jacob Petit

About the Item

This pair of striking 19th century porcelain vases, though unmarked, were almost certainly produced by Jacob Petit (1797-1868), the French pottery manufacturer well-known for his idiosyncratic interpretations of the flamboyant 18th century rocaille style. Close comparisons can be made between the highly detailed and life-like flowers, as well as the curious golden, stylized coral branch handles to known examples of porcelain designed by Petit. Measuring over two feet tall, both vases share the same general overall design scheme, each decorated with a hand painted "scène galante" of a flirtatious couple on one side, and a country still life on the opposite. The golden "coral branch" handles are virtually identical, and though the delicately crafted porcelain flowers are distributed in a similar pattern, their colors and designs vary between the two vases. The general condition of both vases is very good, with no obvious chips or cracks, the only damage being some small losses at the edges of a few of the flowers.

  • Pair of 19th Century Aesthetic Movement Majolica Urns, German, Attrib. Hanke
    By Reinhold Hanke
    Located in Madrid, ES
A matched pair of late 19th century Bohemian / German majolica porcelain urns. With a contrasting mix of Christian, mythological, grotesque and neoclassical elements, they exemplify the highly decorative, "art for art's sake" ideology of the Aesthetic Movement (1860-1900). Colorful and engaging, the style was a direct and confrontational answer to the rise of mass-produced and industrial culture. With impressed marks "R.H. 35" on their bases, the urns were most probably manufactured by Reinhold...

  • 18th Century Spanish Arab Style Copper Water Jug with Compound Dome Lid
    Located in Madrid, ES
Copper containers of varying shapes and sizes have been used in Spanish homes and kitchens for many centuries. Copper and its alloys were particularly popular metals for storing and preparing foodstuffs, not only because they were they durable, but because these metals exhibited natural antibacterial properties. This particular jug, most likely made for the storage and serving of liquids such as water or milk, exhibits strong Hispano-Moresque influences. The baluster shape, subtle geometric patterns on the neck, and fitted, "compound" dome lid all reference Spanish Arab...
