Pair of Large Sèvres Style Porcelain Vases, Detailed Ormolu, Serpent Handles

About the Item

Impressive in size (1 meter / 3.28 feet), this striking pair of 19th century Sèvres style porcelain ewers / vases demonstrate a high level of detail and quality in both the metalwork and hand-painted decoration. The dual serpent handles, green man and vegetal motifs of the golden ormolu fittings combine with the meticulously painted goddess / muse figures to present an impression of luxurious mythology. The sky blue ground color is known as "Bleu Céleste" and was developed by Sèvres in the 18th century. Famously expensive, it was used in the making of porcelain pieces destined for royal use. This high quality pair of 19th century revival pieces follow the Sèvres model down to the last detail, including "spurious" or imitation Sèvres marks painted on the bottoms of each (a common practice among even the highest level porcelain makers). Both goddess / muse paintings are signed "Maglin" - referring to the recognized and well-respected French porcelain decorator of the 19th century, A. Maglin. The pair are in overall very good condition with no cracks or chips, the only faults being barely visible touch-ups made at the junction of the upper and lower porcelain parts of the vases (see photo with red arrow).

Copper containers of varying shapes and sizes have been used in Spanish homes and kitchens for many centuries. Copper and its alloys were particularly popular metals for storing and preparing foodstuffs, not only because they were they durable, but because these metals exhibited natural antibacterial properties. This particular jug, most likely made for the storage and serving of liquids such as water or milk, exhibits strong Hispano-Moresque influences. The baluster shape, symmetrical wing-like handles, and fitted, domed lid all reference Spanish Arab...
