Pair of One-of-a-Kind Sculptural Ceramic Vases by Pietro Melandri, Faenza, 1960s
About the Item
Striking and highly expressive pair of hand-formed vases by Italian ceramist Pietro Melandri, crafted in Faenza in the 1960s. Each vase is completely unique in its form and glazing, exemplifying the organic spontaneity and artistic flair of postwar Italian studio pottery.
Both pieces are signed Melandri Faenza on the base and feature rich, vibrant glazes in earthy ochres, siennas, and deep greens, with the addition of flowing red accents on one piece. Their tactile, sculptural forms — pinched, twisted, and asymmetrically shaped — evoke the freedom of gesture typical of informal abstraction and are strongly reminiscent of the Brutalist ceramic movement.
The surfaces are animated by irregular textures and dripping glazes that celebrate the unpredictability of fire and material, emphasizing the artist’s intuitive approach to form. The spontaneity of the silhouettes and their chromatic energy make these pieces ideal as sculptural accents, either displayed together or individually.
